Anyone opt to not use pacifier?

So just wondering if anyone decided to NOT use a pacifier at all? My mom who raises my niece decided not to give her a pacifier because she hates when she sees 4 year olds still using them and didn't want her to be dependent on it as a "security blanket" Now that I am pregnant, I have considered not giving my son one. anyone else have this mentality?
